{"id":35018,"date":"2025-08-08T18:46:35","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T18:46:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=35018"},"modified":"2025-08-08T18:46:35","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T18:46:35","slug":"ev-sales-soar-as-trumps-big-beautiful-bill-axes-7500-tax-credit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=35018","title":{"rendered":"EV sales soar as Trump&#8217;s &#8216;big beautiful bill&#8217; axes $7,500 tax credit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-107227090\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Halfpoint Images | Moment | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Consumers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/10\/trump-big-beautiful-bill-ends-7500-ev-tax-credit-time-to-buy-vehicle.html\">racing to buy<\/a> electric vehicles before a fast-approaching deadline to claim tax credits worth up to $7,500, according to auto analysts.<\/p>\n<p>Legislation championed by Republicans on Capitol Hill and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/guide\/what-trumps-one-big-beautiful-bill-means-for-your-money\/\">signed<\/a> by President Donald Trump in July eliminates the tax breaks \u2014 available for new, used and leased EVs \u2014 after Sept. 30.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden-era Inflation Reduction Act had originally offered the tax breaks to consumers through 2032.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re expecting Q3 may be [a] record for EV sales because of the tax incentives going away,&#8221; said Stephanie Valdez Streaty, a senior analyst at Cox Automotive.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People are rushing out&#8221; to buy, she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"significant-volume-of-ev-sales\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>&#8216;Significant volume&#8217; of EV sales<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Consumers purchased nearly 130,100 new EVs in July, the second-highest monthly sales tally on record, behind roughly 136,000 sold in December, according to Cox Automotive data. The July figures represent a 26.4% increase from June and nearly 20% increase year-over-year, Streaty said.<\/p>\n<p>The share of EV sales in July also accounted for about 9.1% of total sales of passenger vehicles that month, the largest monthly share on record, according to Cox.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re seeing significant volume in new EVs,&#8221; said Liz Najman, director of market insights at Recurrent, an EV marketplace and data provider.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108181329\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108181329\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000384516\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Meanwhile, there were nearly 36,700 used EVs sold in July, a record monthly high, Cox data shows. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Specific EV models \u2014 the Chevy Equinox EV, Honda Prologue and Hyundai IONIQ 5 \u2014 also saw record-breaking sales last month, Najman said.<\/p>\n<p>There were 8,500 Equinox EVs sold in July, the highest monthly EV total in the U.S. for any model outside of Tesla, which is the market leader, Najman said.<\/p>\n<p>(This comes as Tesla&#8217;s sales have declined for two consecutive quarters, by about 12% year-over-year in Q2 and 9% in Q1, according to Cox data.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"7500-tax-credit-puts-evs-near-price-parity\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>$7,500 tax credit puts EVs near price parity<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The tax credits \u2014 worth up to $7,500 for new EVs and $4,000 for used EVs \u2014 aim to make EV purchases more financially enticing for consumers.<\/p>\n<p>The EV tax breaks were one of many policies the Biden administration adopted to try try to cut U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. The transportation sector is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/publication\/58861\" target=\"_blank\">largest source<\/a> of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More from Personal Finance:<\/strong><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/07\/trump-tariffs-investors.html\">Trump tariffs make investing &#8216;tricky&#8217;<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/08\/imposter-scam-ftc-seniors-bank-401k-accounts.html\">Imposter scams cost older adults $700 million in 2024<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/07\/trump-private-assets-retirement-plans.html\">What private assets in 401(k) plans mean for investors<\/a><\/p>\n<p>EVs are &#8220;unambiguously better&#8221; for the environment than traditional cars with an internal combustion engine, <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.mit.edu\/explainers\/electric-vehicles\" target=\"_blank\">according<\/a> to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.<\/p>\n<p>However, while EVs tend to be cheaper over the lifecycle of car ownership relative to traditional gasoline vehicles, they generally carry a higher upfront cost, analysts said.<\/p>\n<p>The average transaction price for all new passenger vehicles (aside from battery electric vehicles) in July was $48,078, according to Cox data.<\/p>\n<p>The average for new EVs was $55,689, before any dealer incentives and tax credits, Cox said. If the purchase were to qualify for the full $7,500 tax credit, it&#8217;d be near price parity, around $48,189.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The price gap between EV and gasoline cars &#8220;no longer exists,&#8221; Tom Libby, an analyst at S&amp;P Global, wrote in July. The disappearance of the federal tax credits &#8220;jeopardizes&#8221; price competitiveness, he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>States and utilities may offer additional financial incentives for EVs, depending on where consumers live, analysts said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"ev-dealers-boost-incentives\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline2\"\/>EV dealers boost incentives<\/h2>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-107227093\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Maskot | Maskot | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Dealers are also seeking to capitalize on the upcoming Sept. 30 deadline, stoking a sense of consumer urgency to boost sales, analysts said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;$7,500 Federal Tax Credit Ending,&#8221; was in bold lettering at the top of Tesla&#8217;s home page as of early afternoon Friday. &#8220;Limited Inventory \u2014 Take Delivery Now,&#8221; the automaker wrote underneath.<\/p>\n<p>Sept. 30 is the date by which consumers must take ownership of the car (essentially, be driving it off the lot) to qualify for an EV tax credit.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the tax breaks, dealers are also offering relatively generous financial benefits to entice consumers.<\/p>\n<p>They provided about $9,800 of additional financial incentives, on average, to new-EV buyers in July, worth about 17.5% of the average transaction price, Cox data shows.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108171517\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108171517\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000382245\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/108171518-17525031521752503149-40716569159-1080pnbcnews.jpg?v=1752503151&amp;w=750&amp;h=422&amp;vtcrop=y\" alt=\"How Chinese EVs are taking on Tesla\"\/><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>That share is the highest percentage dating to October 2017, which was before the &#8220;new era of EV adoption&#8221; when monthly sales volume was quite low, Streaty said.<\/p>\n<p>EV sales are likely to &#8220;collapse&#8221; in the fourth quarter of 2025, once the tax credit expires and the market adjusts to a new financial reality, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Used EVs are likely to be a bright spot in the near term, analysts said.<\/p>\n<p>Growth has been accelerating, and most buyers today already don&#8217;t qualify for the $4,000 tax break.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[A]pproximately one-third of used EVs qualified for the incentive anyway,&#8221;
