But many market watchers<strong> <\/strong>have been hauled back to their desks by news overnight that they have been hit with a 39% tariff rate by the White House.<\/p>\n<p>That came as a shock to the Alpine nation. Indications in the Swiss press had been that the country was close to negotiating an outline deal similar to those struck by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/29\/the-eu-us-trade-deal-could-have-one-unexpected-winner-the-uk.html\">European Union<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/29\/the-eu-us-trade-deal-could-have-one-unexpected-winner-the-uk.html\">the U.K.<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/23\/trump-announces-massive-trade-deal-with-japan-with-15percent-tariffs.html\">Japan<\/a>, which set baseline tariffs between 10% and 15%. Instead, it has received one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/07\/further-modifying-the-reciprocal-tariff-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\">highest rates<\/a> of any country.<\/p>\n<p>That is hugely significant, with the U.S. accounting for around a sixth of Switzerland\u2019s total exports. Businesses breathed a sign of relief in April when the country swerved initial plans for a 31% tariff, being handed an interim 10% duty along with most of the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-DataWrapperChart\" class=\"DataWrapperChart-dataWrapperContainer\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/24502426\/embed\" title=\"Interactive or visual content\" class=\"flourish-embed-iframe\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"width:100%;height:600px;\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-forms allow-scripts allow-downloads allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div style=\"width:100%!;margin-top:4px!important;text-align:right!important;\"><a class=\"flourish-credit\" href=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/24502426\/?utm_source=embed&utm_campaign=visualisation\/24502426\" target=\"_top\" style=\"text-decoration:none!important\"> <\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>As of late Thursday, new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/07\/further-modifying-the-reciprocal-tariff-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\">tariff rates on a dozens of countries<\/a> that have not yet agreed a framework trade arrangement with the U.S. are set to come into force from Aug. 7. Given the precedent set by U.S. President Donald Trump for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/01\/another-late-night-trump-trade-twist-hours-before-the-world-hit-go.html\">last-minute deadline changes<\/a> and down-to-the-wire deals, that does leave room for the situation to change.<\/p>\n<p>Another potential reprieve came as the Swiss Federal Department of Economic Affairs told Reuters on Friday it understands the 39% tariff will not include the pharmaceutical sector, which is separately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/01\/trumps-drug-price-ultimatum-sets-pharma-firms-scrambling.html\">facing volatility from Trump\u2019s latest comments on drug pricing<\/a>. These tariffs are based on no rational basis and are arbitrary. This decision puts tens of thousands of jobs in the industry at risk,\u201d the group\u2019s director Stefan Brupbacher said.<\/p>\n<p>Beat Wittmann, chairman and partner at Porta Advisors, said the news delivered a \u201cdevastating\u201d blow to the Swiss economy and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe U.S. leads a zigzagging unilateral war on tariffs and this unpredictability imposes a rising risk premium on financial assets,\u201d he said in emailed comments. \u201cThis will lead to a weakening of the Swiss economy, the Swiss Franc and the Swiss equity market, particularly the all-important export sector.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108180266\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108180266\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000384272\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/108180267-17540353161754035314-40983967082-1080pnbcnews.jpg?v=1754035315&w=750&h=422&vtcrop=y\" alt=\"Swiss tariff shock: who\u2019s most exposed?\"\/><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The Swiss government needs to recognize that the time for \u201ccherry picking, carve outs and special deals\u201d is over, particularly for small, highly-exposed states, Wittmann added.<\/p>\n<p>Key Swiss exports include chemical and pharmaceutical products, watches and jewelry, chocolate, gemstones and electronics.<\/p>\n<p>Adrian Prettejohn, Europe economist at Capital Economics, said in a note that a 39% tariff rate would knock around 0.6% off Switzerland\u2019s GDP, or more with the inclusion of pharmaceuticals \u2014 but that he expected it to be negotiated down.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108180242\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108180242\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000384266\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/108180247-1754031420751-1754030929-40983278218-hd.jpg?v=1754031422&w=750&h=422&vtcrop=y\" alt=\"Switzerland reels from 39% Trump tariff\"\/><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>With the Swiss stock market closed for national day, indicators are instead feeding through other avenues such as the performance of London-listed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/undefined\/\">Watches of Switzerland<\/a>, which fell nearly 9% in morning deals.<\/p>\n<p>In a Friday note to clients, analysts at investment bank Jefferies cited the company, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/CFR-CH\/\">Richemont<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/UHR-CH\/\">Swatch Group<\/a>, as among those that would take the biggest hits from the news, particularly relative to previous expectations. The rally has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/06\/04\/swiss-franc-why-a-strong-currency-is-causing-problems-for-switzerland.html\">delivered challenges to the economy<\/a>, which in May marked a return to deflation for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic \u2014 spurring the Swiss National Bank to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/06\/19\/switzerland-returns-to-era-of-zero-interest-rates.html\">cut interest rates to zero in June<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"i-do-not-think-it-is-the-end\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>\u2018I do not think it is the end\u2019<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Rahul Sahgal, CEO of the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce, told CNBC\u2019s \u201cSquawk Box Europe\u201d the tariff news was \u201cvery disappointing\u201d after many rounds of negotiations with the U.S. Treasury Department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to say, however, that I hope and I do not think that it is the end,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108180324\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108180324\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000384288\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/108180330-1754046212481-1754045492-40985637068-hd.jpg?v=1754046215&w=750&h=422&vtcrop=y\" alt=\"Why Switzerland can\u2019t close its trade gap in goods with the U.S.\"\/><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>\u201cWe have still, firstly, those days till the 7th of August, and also, if you read the executive order, it does leave a certain window open, let\u2019s put it that way, saying that if you are in negotiations with the U.S. these additional tariffs may not apply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One element of previously-struck deals is a commitment to increase investment in the U.S., which in the case of the EU is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/30\/eu-us-trade-agreement-wont-derail-european-defense-boom-analysts-say.html\">set to total $600 billion<\/a> along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/29\/trump-eu-trade-deal-energy-gas-oil-lng-nuclear.html\">hundreds of billions in additional energy purchases<\/a>. On this, Sahgal said Switzerland was looking in the range of a $150 billion investment pledge, which was one of the biggest relative to the size of its economy. The country is already the sixth largest overall investor in the U.S., he added.<\/p>\n<p>Sahgal continued that it was hard to say what the sticking point in negotiations had been or how the 39% rate had been calculated, noting that across both goods and services the trade relationship between Switzerland and the U.S. was balanced \u2014 but that Trump was only focused on the former.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSwitzerland is a country\u2026 of 9 million people, and the U.S. has something like 30 million people.
