But 90% of filers don’t itemize, according to the latest IRS data, which means they can’t take the charitable deduction.

This changes in 2026 with a new charitable tax break for non-itemizers, worth up to $1,000 for single filers and $2,000 for married couples filing jointly. The deduction only applies to cash gifts.

“This is a big deal,” said Justin Miller, partner and national director of wealth planning at Evercore Wealth Management.

More from Personal Finance:
Trump’s ‘big beautiful bill’ and other changes benefit ABLE accounts
Fed holds interest rates steady: Here’s what that means for your money
Senate introduces bill for tariff rebate checks after Trump suggestion

Trump’s new charitable deduction is similar to a temporary measure enacted during the pandemic, which was worth up to $300 for single filers or $600 for joint filers for 2021.
