Santiago | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Companies behind some of America\u2019s best-known brands are warning that tariffs will raise costs by hundreds of millions of dollars as Friday\u2019s key deadline nears.<\/p>\n<p>Firms are gearing up for the long-awaited Friday deadline, when the White House says it will start <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/20\/trump-trade-lutnick-august-1-tariffs.html\">imposing higher import taxes<\/a> on foreign countries. Now businesses in a range of industries are saying this shakeup in global trading practices will cost them.<\/p>\n<p>Tool maker <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/SWK\/\">Stanley Black & Decker<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> said Tuesday it expects an $800 annualized hit from policy changes tied to tariffs. That doesn\u2019t include costs in connection with steps the company is taking to mitigate the effects of the levies, according to finance chief Patrick Hallinan.<\/p>\n<p>For Marie Callender\u2019s and Slim Jim parent <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/CAG\/\">Conagra Brands<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>, higher tariffs are expected to raise its costs of goods sold by 3%, equivalent to an annual increase of more than $200 million, CEO Sean Connolly said earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the Chicago-based company\u2019s production is in the U.S., but management says it still has to contend with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/03\/12\/trumps-25percent-tariffs-on-steel-and-aluminum-imports-take-effect.html\">steel and aluminum tariffs<\/a> that will raise the cost of packaging.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-5\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/TSLA\/\">Tesla<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>, led by President Trump\u2019s erstwhile ally Elon Musk, said that costs tied to tariffs have increased by about $300 million. Roughly two-thirds of that is tied to the electric vehicle maker\u2019s auto business, while the rest is from the energy arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we are doing our best to manage these impacts, we are in an unpredictable environment on the tariff front,\u201d finance chief Vaibhav Taneja told analysts and investors on Tesla\u2019s earnings call last week.<\/p>\n<p>Those pressures extend throughout the auto industry. <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-6\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/GM\/\">General Motors<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> said earnings before interest and taxes in the latest quarter suffered a $1.1 billion hit that the Detroit-based automaker chalked up to the net effect of tariffs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-101607568\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Whirlpool washing and drying machines for sale at a Howard\u2019s Appliances store in Torrance, Calif.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick T. The same day, appliance maker <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-8\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/WHR\/\">Whirlpool<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> said North American sales and earnings were hurt in the second quarter as Asian competitors rushed to export goods to the U.S. in advance of higher tariffs.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"inflation-focus\" class=\"ArticleBody-smallSubtitle\">Inflation focus<\/h3>\n<p>U.S. consumers haven\u2019t yet experienced meaningful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/15\/cpi-inflation-report-june-2025.html\">bumps to inflation<\/a> as a result of higher tariffs. That can be attributed to domestic companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/25\/inflation-ahead-companies-will-only-absorb-higher-tariff-costs-for-so-long.html\">currently absorbing<\/a> cost hikes, but some economists warn that business may soon start passing the increases on to shoppers after this week\u2019s deadline passes.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the \u201ccore\u201d version of the consumer price index, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, should rise at an annual rate of 3.2% in the third quarter, up from 2.1% in the second quarter, according to Nancy Lazar, Piper Sandler\u2019s chief global economist.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign exporters have been covering \u201cvery little\u201d of the tariffs and have been \u201cgetting off easy,\u201d Lazar said in a recent note to clients.<\/p>\n<p>Still, not every American company is taking a hands-off approach and swallowing the higher costs.<\/p>\n<p>Paul De Cock, operations chief at carpet manufacturer <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-11\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/MHK\/\">Mohawk Industries<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>, said last week that it is implementing 8% price increases. There may be need for further price hikes in the sector if tariffs further raise costs, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe continue to work with customers and suppliers to manage the impact of\u00a0tariff\u00a0costs as the situation evolves,\u201d De Cock said on the Georgia-based company\u2019s earnings call.<\/p>\n<p>Mohawk is encouraging consumers to look at domestically produced alternatives, he said. The company is also expanding capacity for quartz countertops made in Tennessee, which will increase the supply of goods not subject to tariffs, de Cock added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108178599\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108178599\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000383879\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>For its part, the White House is aiming to soothe companies\u2019 concerns about the looming deadline for tariffs, which were a core tenet of Trump\u2019s campaign last year. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/29\/trump-china-trade-tariffs-bessent.html\">told CNBC<\/a> on Tuesday that countries facing high tariff rates can lower them by negotiating a deal with the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would think that it\u2019s not the end of the world if these snapback tariffs are on for anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, as long as the countries are moving forward and trying to negotiate in good faith,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/30\/stanley-black-decker-conagra-trump-tariffs-cost-increases.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"DeWalt power tools are displayed at a Home Depot on May 2, 2025 in New York City.
