Last year it reduced rates from a record high of 4%.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The environment remains exceptionally uncertain, especially because of trade disputes,&#8221; the ECB said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>While annual inflation in the euro area hit the central bank&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/01\/euro-zone-inflation-edges-higher-hitting-ecbs-2percent-target-in-june.html\">2% target last month<\/a>, traders widely expected a hold in July \u2014 in large part due to geopolitical volatility. The U.S. is the EU&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/policy.trade.ec.europa.eu\/eu-trade-relationships-country-and-region\/countries-and-regions\/united-states_en\" target=\"_blank\">biggest<\/a> bilateral trade and investment partner and the 27-member bloc <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/14\/in-numbers-what-trumps-30percent-tariff-threat-means-for-the-eu.html\">exported<\/a> 503 billion euros ($590 billion) in goods to the States last year.<\/p>\n<p>As of Thursday, the future of that trade relationship remained up in the air, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/24\/with-no-guarantee-of-an-eu-us-trade-deal-europe-keeps-its-options-open.html\">one possibility being a 15% baseline tariff rate<\/a> on all EU imports to the U.S., along with retaliatory measures on the EU&#8217;s part.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-DataWrapperChart\" class=\"DataWrapperChart-dataWrapperContainer\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/24385700\/embed\" title=\"Interactive or visual content\" class=\"flourish-embed-iframe\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"width:100%;height:600px;\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-forms allow-scripts allow-downloads allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div style=\"width:100%!;margin-top:4px!important;text-align:right!important;\"><a class=\"flourish-credit\" href=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/24385700\/?utm_source=embed&amp;utm_campaign=visualisation\/24385700\" target=\"_top\" style=\"text-decoration:none!important\"> <\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>ECB officials have been suggesting for some time that their work in bringing down inflation is nearly done, as it hunts for the so-called &#8220;neutral&#8221; level at which rates are neither stimulating, nor restricting growth.
