Power from these facilities that is not required by the tech giant will be funnelled to electricity markets across the US.<\/p>\n<p>The deal is part of an effort to \u201cresponsibly grow the digital infrastructure that powers daily life for people, communities and businesses\u201d, Google said. <\/p>\n<p>It comes as technology companies rush to meet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/artificial-intelligence\" data-trackable=\"link\">AI<\/a>\u2019s intense energy demands while easing concerns about the environmental impact of the technology. <\/p>\n<p>While data centre developers have previously struck similar deals to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/70f3ce57-1d02-4aa9-a94f-d8d728671672\" data-trackable=\"link\">finance<\/a> wind and solar farms, the focus on hydropower reflects a political and regulatory shift towards \u201cfirm\u201d sources of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/renewable-energy\" data-trackable=\"link\">renewable energy<\/a> \u2014 which provide a consistent power supply regardless of the weather or time of day. <\/p>\n<p>Social media group Meta in June agreed to buy the output of a nuclear plant in Illinois for two decades. <\/p>\n<p>US President Donald Trump\u2019s so-called big, beautiful fiscal bill, which was passed this month, retained production and investment tax credits for hydropower until 2036.
