We begin in Washington where Donald Trump has threatened Russia with \u201csevere\u201d tariffs and other financial penalties if the war in Ukraine does not end soon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What happened: <\/strong>During a meeting with Nato secretary-general Mark Rutte in the Oval Office yesterday, the US president said he was \u201cvery unhappy\u201d with Moscow over the lack of progress towards a deal to end the conflict. \u201cI\u2019m disappointed in President [Vladimir] Putin, because I thought we would have had a deal two months ago,\u201d Trump said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don\u2019t have a deal in 50 days, tariffs at about 100 per cent, you\u2019d call them secondary tariffs,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Secondary tariffs:<\/strong> A White House official later said the US was prepared to use \u201csevere sanctions and tariffs\u201d against Russia. Traders are due to come to the rescue of their investment banking colleagues, who are on course to extend a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/dd9a7e83-5a3e-45b3-b2af-8b2a124474c6\" data-trackable=\"link\">record streak of underperformance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"five-more-top-stories\" class=\"n-content-heading-3 o3-editorial-typography-subheading\">Five more top stories<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1. EU plans to raise more money for Ukraine <\/strong>by putting frozen Russian state funds into riskier investments would amount to \u201cexpropriation\u201d, the institution holding the bulk of the assets has warned. Euroclear chief executive Val\u00e9rie Urbain told the Financial Times that plans to reinvest cash generated by the assets to yield higher profits could risk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7c6ae0e9-aebf-4793-8bc1-35c695466381\" data-trackable=\"link\">further retaliation from Moscow<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"o3-editorial-typography-list-unordered\">\n<li>\n<p><strong>EU common budget:<\/strong> Brussels is to unveil a new way to allocate more than \u20ac750bn of EU farming and development funds, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c66899f3-fc60-4783-b906-76f0b0580323\" data-trackable=\"link\">favouring newer member states<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2.
