His decision was \u201cin the public interest\u201d, Laplante added.<\/p>\n<p>The top court last month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d678fbfb-2243-470c-ac7c-2c79ddc8506d\" data-trackable=\"link\">granted the Trump administration\u2019s request<\/a> to limit lower court injunctions to the individual parties bringing lawsuits, rather than having a nationwide scope.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But just hours after the Supreme Court\u2019s order, several legal groups filed a class-action lawsuit seeking to represent all children born in the US, which led to Laplante\u2019s decision.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis ruling is a huge victory and will help protect the citizenship of all children born in the United States, as the Constitution intended,\u201d said Cody Wofsy, deputy director of the ACLU\u2019s Immigrants\u2019 Rights Project, who argued the case against the government. \u201cWe are fighting to ensure President Trump doesn\u2019t trample on the citizenship rights of one single child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The Fourteenth Amendment holds that all \u201cpersons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States\u201d. But Trump has argued that it does not \u201cextend citizenship universally to everyone born\u201d in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The president\u2019s executive order denies American citizenship to children born in the country to unauthorised immigrants. US states, advocacy groups and individuals filed numerous lawsuits challenging the measure as illegal.
