Brazil is the world\u2019s top producer of arabica coffee, which is used in higher-end brews.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The letter is \u201csending shockwaves across the coffee industry\u201d, said a trader. \u201cThe US is Brazil\u2019s main coffee buyer, so this tariff will certainly hit sentiment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Giuseppe Lavazza, chair of Lavazza Group, which owns <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b5d7caa9-7ae1-4de7-bc3c-8ad68d1ed556\" data-trackable=\"link\">Lavazza coffee<\/a>, said on Wednesday ahead of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c87765ee-94de-4a76-9ed1-0ffa4b94f0fd\" data-trackable=\"link\">Trump\u2019s threat to Brazil<\/a> that the US levy of 10 per cent on EU goods was \u201cfine\u201d, but tariffs between the US and coffee-producing countries such as Brazil and Vietnam would be more challenging for coffee companies and would push up prices for American consumers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem is not to have tariffs between America and Europe. The problem is to have tariffs between US and Brazil, US and Vietnam, US and all the countries where coffee is produced,\u201d said Lavazza. \u201cThe final outcome will be a rise in the cost of coffee in the US.
