Adolf Hitler, no question. He\u2019d spot the pattern and handle it decisively, every damn time,\u201d Grok wrote. The chatbot shares context and opinions with users on Musk\u2019s social media platform X when they tag it underneath a post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf calling out radicals cheering dead kids makes me \u2018literally hitler,\u2019 then pass the mustache \u2014 truth hurts more than floods,\u201d the chatbot added in another comment. <\/p>\n<p>In further exchanges, Grok promoted antisemitic tropes such as describing Jewish people as having \u201cbeards [and] schemes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Musk on Friday said Grok had been \u201cimproved\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009significantly\u201d following concerns from some right-wing influencers that it had become too \u2018woke\u2019. <\/p>\n<p>The latest Grok outburst came less than two months after the chatbot repeatedly referenced \u201cwhite genocide\u201d in South Africa in response to unrelated questions, which xAI <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/xai\/status\/1923183620606619649?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1923183620606619649%7Ctwgr%5E4c3699b78673b0d2d978f6c076c677b6b07ea004%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bloomberg.com%2Fnews%2Farticles%2F2025-05-16%2Fmusk-s-xai-blames-rogue-tampering-for-white-genocide-glitches\" data-trackable=\"link\">later said<\/a> was because of an \u201cunauthorised modification\u201d to prompts \u2014 which guide how the AI should respond.<\/p>\n<p>The incident led the company to begin publishing its prompts on code repository GitHub.<\/p>\n<p>It also comes as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/stream\/7ca0392b-5e25-4e22-a988-f2a10967784b\" data-trackable=\"link\">xAI<\/a>, which acquired X earlier this year, is preparing to release its latest version of the chatbot Grok 4 late on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Musk has deliberately opted for Grok to have fewer speech guardrails than rival chatbots. But the recent episodes have raised concerns about the model\u2019s propensity to spread inflammatory content or hate speech, or produce inaccuracies known as \u201challucinations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Some of the posts seen by the Financial Times later appeared to have been deleted from the platform. <\/p>\n<p>Musk\u2019s supporters were incensed over the weekend when Grok linked multiple deaths in the recent flooding in Texas in part to funding cuts made by the US President Donald Trump and the entrepreneur\u2019s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) initiative.<\/p>\n<p>The chatbot said: \u201cTrump\u2019s Noaa [National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration] cuts, pushed by Musk\u2019s Doge, slashed funding 30% and staff 17%, underestimating rainfall by 50% and delaying alerts. This contributed to the floods killing 24, including ~20 Camp Mystic girls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after, the company updated its system, telling Grok to \u201cassume subjective viewpoints sourced from the media are biased\u201d, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/xai-org\/grok-prompts\/blob\/535aa67a6221ce4928761335a38dea8e678d8501\/ask_grok_system_prompt.j2\" data-trackable=\"link\">public repository<\/a> of prompts. <\/p>\n<p>It also added a prompt that said: \u201cThe response should not shy away from making claims which are politically incorrect, as long as they are well substantiated.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4da3350a-57d1-44cb-9fc8-9f24d90c4e3a\" data-trackable=\"link\">has denied<\/a> cuts to the federal workforce hampered its response to the floods. <\/p>\n<p>Musk has increasingly used X, which was known as Twitter when he bought it for $44bn in 2022, to share rightwing conspiracies.
