Netanyahu reached across the table in the Blue Room to hand Trump a letter he wrote to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/152a10cb-33cf-4601-9693-b909f356aacf\" data-trackable=\"link\">Nobel Peace Prize committee<\/a> proposing the US president for the award \u2014 an accolade the president covets. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s nominating you for the Peace Prize, which is well deserved, and you should get it\u201d, Netanyahu told Trump. \u201cIt\u2019s a great honour,\u201d Trump replied. <\/p>\n<p>The reunion of the two leaders after their aerial campaigns against Tehran papered over some of the tensions between Trump and Netanyahu that flared in the run-up and aftermath of the Iran strikes. <\/p>\n<p>Most crucially, Trump and Netanyahu did not reach any big breakthroughs on the questions surrounding the future of the Middle East, from the near-term prospects for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1da3906b-a2d1-4b5b-8b33-ba54057c69b7\" data-trackable=\"link\">ceasefire in Gaza<\/a>, postwar plans for the enclave, and negotiations for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/e6548a64-55a4-461e-a311-343fdb4ffc36\" data-trackable=\"link\">longer-term pact with Iran<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Trump has been pushing Netanyahu with increasing urgency for a truce in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, which he hoped to clinch \u201cthis week\u201d. When asked about a possible deal, the US president said the negotiations were going well. \u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s a hold-up,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>He then quickly turned back to discussing Iran and its limited retaliation against the US strikes. \u201cIn the end, missiles were shot and every single missile was shot out of the air,\u201d Trump said. <\/p>\n<p>Hamas said on Friday that it had delivered a \u201cpositive\u201d response to a 60-day ceasefire involving the release of Israeli hostages and the beginning of talks on a permanent end to the conflict. <\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu on Sunday dispatched negotiators to Doha to try to finalise the US-brokered deal. Trump is sending Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff to join the talks. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Trump and Netanyahu both said the US and Israel were close to finding other countries to resettle Palestinians displaced from Gaza. \u201cI think we\u2019re getting close to finding several countries,\u201d Netanyahu said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had great co-operation from countries surrounding Israel,\u201d Trump added.<\/p>\n<aside aria-labelledby=\"aside-label\" class=\"n-content-recommended--single-story n-content-recommended--inset\" data-component=\"recommended\">\n<p class=\"n-content-recommended__title o3-type-body-highlight\">Recommended<\/p>\n<div class=\"o-teaser o-teaser--article o-teaser--small o-teaser--stacked o-teaser--has-image js-teaser\" data-id=\"8d9cdf41-6caf-4a31-8150-2ca6cc2dc20c\">\n<div class=\"o-teaser__image-container js-teaser-image-container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8d9cdf41-6caf-4a31-8150-2ca6cc2dc20c\" data-trackable=\"image-link\" data-trackable-context-story-link=\"image-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"o-teaser__image-placeholder\" style=\"aspect-ratio:2299\/1293\"><\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>But when asked whether there could be a \u201ctwo-state solution\u201d with Palestine as an independent country alongside Israel, Trump departed from traditional US support for this position. \u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d he said, punting the question to Netanyahu. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Palestinians should have all the powers the government has but none of the power should threaten us,\u201d Netanyahu said. <\/p>\n<p>The future of Tehran\u2019s nuclear programme also remained unresolved. \u201cWe have scheduled Iran talks,\u201d Trump told reporters. Witkoff said there would be a meeting \u201cin the next week or so\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The US president added that he would be keen to give Iran sanctions relief so it can start reassembling its economy. \u201cThey are very biting sanctions.
