{"id":33171,"date":"2025-07-05T14:41:15","date_gmt":"2025-07-05T14:41:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=33171"},"modified":"2025-07-05T14:41:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-05T14:41:15","slug":"texas-flash-flood-claims-at-least-24-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=33171","title":{"rendered":"Texas flash flood claims at least 24 lives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description o3-type-body-base\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=d2674431-b775-41f9-a962-6a8e3dcf2224\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>At least 24 people have died and about 20 children are missing after a catastrophic flash flood in Texas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Guadalupe River that runs through Hill Country in central-south Texas rose by 26ft (8 metres) in just 45 minutes in the early hours of Friday, according to officials, bursting its banks and damaging roads and property.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday rescue workers continued to search for about 20 children who are missing from the summer camp they were attending.\u00a0The flood struck as people across the US gathered to celebrate Independence Day. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cRescue teams worked throughout the night and will continue until we find all our citizens,\u201d the City of Kerrville Police Department said on Facebook on Saturday. <\/p>\n<p>The search and rescue operations have involved helicopters, drones, boats and hundreds of personnel, officials said, but have been hampered by limited access to some areas, especially where roads have been washed away.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump said that the flooding and deaths were \u201cterrible\u201d and \u201cshocking\u201d as he pledged federal support.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has axed hundreds of jobs at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and its National Weather Service with critics arguing that the moves would impair the country\u2019s ability to produce life-saving forecasts.<\/p>\n<p>Officials in Kerr County, north-west of San Antonio, said the extreme rainfall had not been forecast, adding that there was no warning system in place.\u00a0\u201cWe had no reason to believe this was going to be anything like what\u2019s happened here,\u201d said Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly, the top local elected official.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Hannah Cloke, a professor of hydrology at the University of Reading in the UK, said the downpour \u201cseems to have been well forecasted by multiple forecasters around the world, several hours in advance\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not good enough for authorities to say they were not aware that floods were coming.
