{"id":32936,"date":"2025-07-01T14:07:54","date_gmt":"2025-07-01T14:07:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=32936"},"modified":"2025-07-01T14:07:54","modified_gmt":"2025-07-01T14:07:54","slug":"eu-toughens-stance-on-donald-trumps-tariffs-as-deadline-looms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=32936","title":{"rendered":"EU toughens stance on Donald Trump\u2019s tariffs as deadline looms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description o3-type-body-base\">Your guide to what Trump\u2019s second term means for Washington, business and the world<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=9b774b4a-7b26-4ea8-95fa-9796dce13253&amp;newsletter-id=65b8fec772badb00166eafc6\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>European capitals have hardened their position in trade talks with Donald Trump, insisting the US drops its tariffs on the EU immediately as part of any framework deal before the looming deadline on July 9. <\/p>\n<p>Trade commissioner Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d has been instructed to take a tougher line on a trip to Washington this week as Brussels tries to remove or at least substantially cut Trump\u2019s levies in the long term.<\/p>\n<p>Washington has indicated to Brussels that the most likely first-stage agreement is a UK-style phased deal that leaves some tariffs in place while talks continue, according to EU officials. <\/p>\n<p>Ambassadors from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/european-union\" data-trackable=\"link\">EU<\/a> member states on Monday asked for \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d to insist that any such deal includes, from July 9, reductions in the current 10 per cent \u201creciprocal\u201d tariff, according to four people briefed on the matter.\u00a0They are also demanding reductions to higher sectoral levies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the UK case, US tariffs on cars and steel continued for some weeks after the initial agreement to allow lower duty or duty-free quotas.<\/p>\n<p>The EU\u2019s 27 members have struggled to display a united front during almost three months of talks. But this week France\u2019s finance minister said the deadline should be extended to get a better agreement.<\/p>\n<p>EU companies have, since April, been subject to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/trump-tariffs\" data-trackable=\"link\">tariffs<\/a> on \u20ac380bn of annual trade with the US, equivalent to about 70 per cent of the total.<\/p>\n<p>That includes sectoral levies of 25 per cent on cars and their parts and 50 per cent on steel and aluminium.<\/p>\n<p>The US is considering extending those to goods including copper, lumber, aerospace parts, pharmaceuticals, chips and critical minerals. <\/p>\n<p>The EU has voted for retaliatory tariffs on \u20ac21bn of US exports but paused them until July 14. The commission is drawing up a new \u20ac95bn tariff package.<\/p>\n<p>\u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d will hold talks on Thursday with US commerce secretary Howard Lutnick and US trade representative Jamieson Greer.<\/p>\n<p>They will discuss a \u201ctwo-page agreement in principle\u201d from the US.
