The two countries have said that they would seek to finalise the first tranche of the full agreement by autumn.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/india\" data-trackable=\"link\">India<\/a> faces tariffs of as much as 26 per cent, among the highest against a major economy, under the levies that Trump unveiled on April 2. The US president has set a deadline of July 9 for new trade agreements to avert the levies.<\/p>\n<p>Rajesh Agarwal, who heads the Indian delegation, was in Washington on Monday to try to iron out the final details of the deal. S Jaishankar, India\u2019s foreign minister, is expected to hold one-on-one talks with his US counterpart Marco Rubio on Tuesday or Wednesday on the sidelines of a meeting in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>According to the people briefed on the talks, the deal is expected to spare India\u2019s big and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c8da5244-06e8-427d-a473-2b2fff3d073d\" data-trackable=\"link\">politically influential agricultural markets<\/a>, including wheat and dairy, from US tariffs, though they noted that the talks were still under way.<\/p>\n<p>A senior Indian government official, who asked not to be named, said there was\u00a0\u201ca lot of sensitivity\u201d over its agriculture markets. <\/p>\n<div class=\"n-content-layout\" data-layout-name=\"card\" data-layout-width=\"inset-left\">\n<div class=\"n-content-layout__container\">\n<h3 id=\"india-business-briefing\" class=\"n-content-heading-3 o3-editorial-typography-subheading\">India Business Briefing<\/h3>\n<div class=\"n-content-layout__slot\">\n<p>The Indian professional\u2019s must-read on business and policy in the world\u2019s fastest-growing big economy. Sign up for the newsletter <a href=\"https:\/\/ep.ft.com\/newsletters\/subscribe?newsletterIds=6745dd55d6c53004ca71b49d\" data-trackable=\"link\">here<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>India has also agreed to import more natural gas from the US to bring down its trade surplus, which stood at $41.2bn for the 2024-2025 financial year, according to the people close to the Indian government.<\/p>\n<p>The two sides have agreed on tariff reductions on one or both sides on thousands of items. <\/p>\n<p>The countries had committed to more than double their bilateral trade to $500bn by 2030 during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s visit to Washington in February. Trump on Thursday promised a \u201cvery big\u201d trade deal that would \u201copen up India\u201d.\u00a0The following day, he said that his administration was \u201clooking to get a full barrier dropping, which is unthinkable\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Agriculture and dairy products remain sensitive.<\/p>\n<p>India has managed to shield its dairy sector from foreign competition in other trade talks, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/51ce0103-7ff1-47f9-a46c-9a8d45cd2056\" data-trackable=\"link\">negotiations with the EU<\/a>.
