{"id":32643,"date":"2025-06-26T12:01:41","date_gmt":"2025-06-26T12:01:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=32643"},"modified":"2025-06-26T12:01:41","modified_gmt":"2025-06-26T12:01:41","slug":"new-fdi-projects-in-the-uk-fall-to-record-low","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=32643","title":{"rendered":"New FDI projects in the UK fall to record low"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description o3-type-body-base\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=d5d459b5-cab2-48bb-8cdc-2a9f1da5dd2c\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>The number of foreign direct investment projects in the UK has fallen to the lowest level since records began 18 years ago, highlighting the challenge facing the government as it seeks to revive overseas interest in Britain and spur growth.<\/p>\n<p>In the financial year ending this March, 1,375 FDI projects landed in the UK, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/dbt-inward-investment-results-2024-to-2025\/dbt-inward-investment-results-2024-to-2025-html-version\" data-trackable=\"link\">data <\/a>published by the Department for Business and Trade on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The figure was down 12 per cent from the previous year and the lowest since records began in 2007-08.<\/p>\n<p>Experts pointed to persistent problems such as high energy costs and geopolitical uncertainty as key factors behind the decline.<\/p>\n<p>The continued fall in inward investment is \u201ca worrying sign for the UK\u201d, said Nigel Driffield, professor of international business at Warwick Business School, adding that \u201chigh energy prices, and continued global uncertainty have weakened global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/foreign-direct-investment\" data-trackable=\"link\">FDI<\/a> flows\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said it illustrated the need for the newly released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ec40e47b-0e0e-4826-9898-4e362b20fa26\" data-trackable=\"link\">industrial strategy<\/a>, noting that \u201cwhile the new reset with the EU will help\u201d, the UK\u2019s closer alignment with the bloc was \u201ctoo late for these figures\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign investment is a key driver of growth in productivity and living standards, but the number of new projects was down nearly 40 per cent from the peak of 2,265 in the financial year 2016-17. <\/p>\n<div class=\"n-content-layout\" data-component=\"flourish\" data-component-id=\"23953287\" data-component-type=\"flourish-in-article\">\n<figure class=\"n-content-picture n-content-layout__container\"><a href=\"#23953287\"><picture data-asset-type=\"flourish\" data-flourish-id=\"23953287\" data-flourish-type=\"visualisation\">\n<div id=\"23953287\" class=\"cp-message o-message o-message--inform o-message--notice\" data-o-component=\"o-message\">\n<div class=\"o-message__container\">\n<div class=\"o-message__content\">\n<p class=\"o-message__content-main\">Some content could not load. Check your internet connection or browser settings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/picture><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Labour\u2019s industrial strategy, a 10-year plan to increase business investment and boost strategic growth sectors, focused on cutting burdensome electricity prices for manufacturers, and backed advanced manufacturing and clean energy industries. <\/p>\n<p>The government did not publish the value of new FDI projects but estimated that jobs created through FDI were down 3 per cent, to 69,355, in the fiscal year to 2024-25.<\/p>\n<p>The number was the lowest since 2020-21, when strict Covid-19 pandemic restrictions were imposed.<\/p>\n<p>The fall in foreign direct investment in 2024-25 \u201cwill be disappointing to the government, given its ambition to attract more foreign capital\u201d, said Andrew Wishart, economist at the investment bank Berenberg. <\/p>\n<p>He noted a \u201ctension\u201d between Labour\u2019s growth ambitions and recent cost pressures on employers, such as the increase in the employers\u2019 national insurance contribution, which took effect from the start of April.<\/p>\n<p>Other European countries have also struggled to attract investment, according to the EY European attractiveness <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ey.com\/en_gl\/foreign-direct-investment-surveys\/ey-europe-attractiveness-survey\" data-trackable=\"link\">survey<\/a> published earlier in June. <\/p>\n<p>It showed that \u201cweak economic growth, geopolitical turbulence and ongoing high energy prices\u201d caused foreign direct investment in Europe to drop to a nine-year low in 2024, with falls for all the largest economies. <\/p>\n<p>London attracted 31 per cent of all UK new projects, the DBT data showed, despite a 15 per cent year-on-year decline. By contrast, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all registered increases.<\/p>\n<p>But there were widespread declines across sectors and countries of origin.
