This is double the 36 per cent of people last autumn, before Trump was elected, according to the latest British Social Attitudes survey published on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Only Russia \u2014 at 90 per cent \u2014 was perceived as a greater threat, putting the US ahead of Israel and Iran, which were both viewed as a security concern by 67 per cent of the British public.<\/p>\n<p>Trump campaigned on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3431e349-94d3-4250-a21d-a91f635af2b4\" data-trackable=\"link\">promise<\/a> to quickly end the Israel-Hamas war and Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, but has fanned the flames of both conflicts since taking office for a second time.<\/p>\n<p>The survey reflects public perceptions before the Israel-Iran war broke out and the US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8f6d3c9c-9d1f-4f17-98e6-3e75d077df6b\" data-trackable=\"link\">launched strikes<\/a> on Iranian nuclear sites, prompting a tentative ceasefire.<\/p>\n<div class=\"n-content-layout\" data-component=\"flourish\" data-component-id=\"23896787\" data-component-type=\"flourish-in-article\">\n<figure class=\"n-content-picture n-content-layout__container\"><a href=\"#23896787\"><picture data-asset-type=\"flourish\" data-flourish-id=\"23896787\" data-flourish-type=\"visualisation\">\n<div id=\"23896787\" class=\"cp-message o-message o-message--inform o-message--notice\" data-o-component=\"o-message\">\n<div class=\"o-message__container\">\n<div class=\"o-message__content\">\n<p class=\"o-message__content-main\">Some content could not load. Check your internet connection or browser settings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/picture><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Gianfranco Addario, research director at the National Centre for Social Research, which published the data, said Trump\u2019s election had driven public views of America as a threat to levels \u201cnever seen before\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The question has been asked twice before 2024, with concerns peaking at 47 per cent in 2005 following the US invasion of Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>Trump campaigned on a promise to keep America out of any new wars and said in his second inaugural address that his \u201cproudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker\u201d. He also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c6894992-5366-4f30-a3ff-d3e837a7c8e6\" data-trackable=\"link\">has aspirations<\/a> of winning the Nobel Peace Prize. <\/p>\n<p>The latest BSA survey, an annual study that has been running since 1983, was conducted between September and October 2024.<\/p>\n<p>A record 9 per cent of respondents \u2014 surveyed before the UK government\u2019s decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/45151f18-3f77-41d7-beed-797028ff18e9\" data-trackable=\"link\">boost the military budget<\/a> \u2014 said defence should be the top priority for extra state spending, compared with just 2 per cent when the question was last asked in 2021.<\/p>\n<div class=\"n-content-layout\" data-component=\"flourish\" data-component-id=\"23897223\" data-component-type=\"flourish-in-article\">\n<figure class=\"n-content-picture n-content-layout__container\"><a href=\"#23897223\"><picture data-asset-type=\"flourish\" data-flourish-id=\"23897223\" data-flourish-type=\"visualisation\">\n<div id=\"23897223\" class=\"cp-message o-message o-message--inform o-message--notice\" data-o-component=\"o-message\">\n<div class=\"o-message__container\">\n<div class=\"o-message__content\">\n<p class=\"o-message__content-main\">Some content could not load.
