<\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Donald Trump said it was a \u201cbig mistake\u201d to exclude Russia from G7 summits as he used his opening remarks of the meeting in Canada\u2019s Rocky Mountains to lament the group\u2019s treatment of Moscow. <\/p>\n<p>The US president delivered his complaint flanked by Mark Carney, Canada\u2019s prime minister, marking an awkward start to this year\u2019s summit, which is being dominated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/middle-east-war\" data-trackable=\"link\">war in the Middle East<\/a>, trade tensions, and Washington\u2019s inability to broker a peace deal in Ukraine. <\/p>\n<p>Trump has long said he would like to see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/g7\" data-trackable=\"link\">G7<\/a> return to a G8 format, bringing Moscow back into the fold as it was before Russia\u2019s annexation of Crimea in 2014. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a big mistake. You wouldn\u2019t have that war,\u201d Trump said, referring to Russia\u2019s full invasion of Ukraine which started in 2022. \u201c[Vladimir] Putin speaks to me, he doesn\u2019t speak to anybody else because he was insulted when he got thrown out of the G8.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The president said it was \u201cnot a bad idea\u201d to have China as part of the G7, which has for decades included the world\u2019s largest industrialised economies and liberal democracies. China and Russia are part of the G20, a wider multilateral group that includes the world\u2019s largest economies. <\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s recriminations came as Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine\u2019s president, was invited to join the group on Tuesday for a special session on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/war-in-ukraine\" data-trackable=\"link\">conflict with Russia<\/a>.
