{"id":23838,"date":"2025-04-13T23:21:19","date_gmt":"2025-04-13T23:21:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=23838"},"modified":"2025-04-13T23:21:19","modified_gmt":"2025-04-13T23:21:19","slug":"germany-willing-to-send-taurus-missiles-to-ukraine-says-merz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=23838","title":{"rendered":"Germany willing to send Taurus missiles to Ukraine, says Merz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\">Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=c8c53a95-fbad-440a-bc57-5802e85c5328&amp;newsletter-id=65b8fec772badb00166eafc6\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Germany is willing to send Taurus long-range missiles to Ukraine, the country\u2019s chancellor-in-waiting has said, as he stressed the need to put Kyiv on the front foot and force concessions from Russian President Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n<p>Friedrich Merz, who is set to take office as the leader of Europe\u2019s largest nation next month, denounced a Russian attack on the Ukrainian city of Sumy on Sunday as \u201ca serious war crime\u201d and said that Kyiv needed help to \u201cget ahead\u201d in the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if he would follow through on a previous call for Germany to supply Ukraine with the Taurus missiles that Kyiv has long asked for, he said that he would be willing to do so if done in co-ordination with European allies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur European partners are already supplying cruise missiles,\u201d he told the public broadcaster ARD on Sunday night. \u201cThe British are doing it, the French are doing it, and the Americans are doing it anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cThis must be jointly agreed. And if it agreed, then Germany should take part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a reference to US President Donald Trump\u2019s efforts to ram through a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, Merz warned that Putin would not \u201crespond positively to weakness and peace offers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said the attack on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/6b1cdce6-a847-40b3-a157-23e207d75d4f\" data-trackable=\"link\">Sumy<\/a>, which left at least 34 civilians dead and 117 injured, was \u201cwhat Putin does to those who talk to him about a ceasefire\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cAt some point, [Putin] must recognise the hopelessness of this war, which means we have to help Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Germany\u2019s outgoing chancellor Olaf Scholz has repeatedly rejected pleas from Kyiv and its allies to supply the Ukrainian armed forces with Taurus missiles, which have an intelligent warhead system that can inflict huge damage to structures such as bridges and bunkers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"n-content-image n-content-image--full\" data-component=\"image-set\"><picture><source media=\"(min-width: 700px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/ftcms%3A7dcfb4fa-c1f0-49a2-a0f7-aed4b2d002d2?source=next-article&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;quality=highest&amp;width=700&amp;dpr=1 1x,https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/ftcms%3A7dcfb4fa-c1f0-49a2-a0f7-aed4b2d002d2?source=next-article&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;quality=highest&amp;width=700&amp;dpr=2 2x,https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/ftcms%3A7dcfb4fa-c1f0-49a2-a0f7-aed4b2d002d2?source=next-article&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;quality=highest&amp;width=700&amp;dpr=3 3x\" width=\"2143\" height=\"1206\"\/><source media=\"(max-width: 490px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/ftcms%3Afa65e411-069b-480a-bd20-7a1f17c7d8a0?source=next-article&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;quality=highest&amp;width=490&amp;dpr=1 1x,https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/ftcms%3Afa65e411-069b-480a-bd20-7a1f17c7d8a0?source=next-article&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;quality=highest&amp;width=490&amp;dpr=2 2x,https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/ftcms%3Afa65e411-069b-480a-bd20-7a1f17c7d8a0?source=next-article&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;quality=highest&amp;width=490&amp;dpr=3 3x\" width=\"1526\" height=\"1526\"\/><\/picture><figcaption class=\"n-content-picture__caption\"><span>Friedrich Merz: \u2018At some point, [Putin] must recognise the hopelessness of this war, which means we have to help Ukraine\u2019<\/span><span> <!-- -->\u00a9 Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 500km plus range of the Taurus system \u2014 built by a joint venture between the European missile maker MBDA and Sweden\u2019s Saab \u2014 is longer than the Storm Shadows supplied by the British and French and the Army Tactical Missile System provided by the US, and would allow Ukraine\u2019s armed forces to strike deep beyond the front line.<\/p>\n<p>Scholz has said supplying Kyiv with Taurus missiles would carry \u201ca great risk of escalation\u201d in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Merz, the leader of the centre-right Christian Democrats (CDU) which came first in February\u2019s federal election, criticised that stance, calling on Scholz last October to set out an ultimatum to Putin and vow to deliver the weapons within 24 hours if he failed to halt attacks on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>However, Merz rowed back on those comments during the election campaign as Scholz sought to cast himself as a \u201cchancellor of peace\u201d who would protect Germany from being dragged into the Ukraine conflict.
