{"id":21187,"date":"2025-03-24T23:59:40","date_gmt":"2025-03-24T23:59:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=21187"},"modified":"2025-03-24T23:59:40","modified_gmt":"2025-03-24T23:59:40","slug":"greenlands-government-hits-back-at-donald-trump-over-us-visit-to-arctic-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=21187","title":{"rendered":"Greenland\u2019s government hits back at Donald Trump over US visit to Arctic island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\">Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=47be3f50-65dd-4693-a6ab-21e17bf046f7&amp;newsletter-id=65b8fec772badb00166eafc6\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Greenland\u2019s government has publicly dressed down US President Donald Trump, saying it had not invited any American officials to the Arctic island amid widespread anger over Washington\u2019s attempts to woo Nuuk.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Waltz, US national security adviser, Usha Vance, wife of vice-president JD Vance, and the army and energy secretaries are due to fly to Greenland this week for what they have billed as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/5d4d990a-0ffe-4d57-a035-5e6d5862049f\" data-trackable=\"link\">private visit<\/a>\u201d to watch a national dog sledding contest and visit a US military base in the far north of the island.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s repeated statements of interest in acquiring Greenland \u2014 which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark \u2014 for national security reasons has placed the vast island of just 57,000 people in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3471657b-e143-439b-a445-5ab87e3a5c2a\" data-trackable=\"link\">geopolitical spotlight<\/a>. He has refused to rule out taking Greenland by force.<\/p>\n<p>The US president said on Monday that his administration was working with \u201cpeople in Greenland\u201d who wanted something to happen. Trump added: \u201cThey\u2019re calling us. We\u2019re not calling them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greenland\u2019s government repudiated that statement on Monday night, saying: \u201cJust for the record, Naalakkersuisut, the government of Greenland, has not extended any invitations for any visits, neither private nor official.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It added: \u201cThe present government is a caretaker government awaiting the formation of a new government coalition, and we have kindly requested all countries to respect this process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump has suggested that national elections in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/stream\/d9a7250f-cf17-3081-abca-3ab028f68042\" data-trackable=\"link\">Greenland<\/a> earlier this month helped the American cause. <\/p>\n<p>But the leaders of all five parties in Greenland\u2019s parliament have condemned his comments, while 85 per cent of the population said in a recent opinion poll that they do not want to become part of the US.<\/p>\n<p>The elections were won by Demokraatit, a party that wants a slow and gradual independence from Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the likely next prime minister and leader of Demokraatit, told Greenlanders on Monday that they needed to \u201cstand together\u201d but that there was no reason for panic.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cWe must not be forced into a power game that we ourselves have not chosen to be part of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greenlanders who protested in recent days in front of the US consulate in Nuuk about Trump\u2019s interest in the island have said there would be a demonstration against the American delegation on Saturday during the national dogsled contest in Sisimiut, the second-largest town.<\/p>\n<p>The US consulate has confirmed it gave a large but confidential sum to the dogsled contest.<\/p>\n<p>Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen, Denmark\u2019s foreign minister, also criticised the upcoming visit as showing a lack of respect for sovereignty and the population of Greenland.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark has tried to signal that it is interested in more co-operation with the US in the Arctic but the upcoming visit is seen in Copenhagen as a provocation unworthy of a Nato ally.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/47be3f50-65dd-4693-a6ab-21e17bf046f7\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":21188,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[23],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-21187","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-us","cs-entry","cs-video-wrap"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/21187","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/5"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=21187"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/21187\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media\/21188"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=21187"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=21187"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=21187"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
