Here&#8217;s why"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-106910308\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>The average tax refund is 10.4% lower than last year according to the latest Internal Revenue Service data, and inflation is taking more of those dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Bill Oxford | E+ | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/02\/07\/average-irs-refund.html\">average tax refund<\/a> this year is down 32.4% compared to last year, according to early filing data from the IRS.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tax season <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/01\/27\/heres-how-to-get-a-faster-tax-refund-this-season-experts-say.html\">opened on Jan. 27<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/filing-season-statistics-for-week-ending-feb-14-2025\" target=\"_blank\">average refund<\/a> amount was $2,169 as of Feb. 14, down from $3,207 about one year prior, the IRS reported on Friday. That figure reflects current-year refunds only.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Feb. 14 filing data doesn&#8217;t include refunds receiving the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/02\/03\/earned-income-tax-credit-eligibility-for-2024.html\">earned income tax credit<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/01\/16\/child-tax-credit-could-change-2025.html\">additional child tax credit<\/a>, which aren&#8217;t issued before mid-February, the IRS noted. The previous year&#8217;s filing data included tax returns claiming these credits. By comparison, there&#8217;s generally a tax bill when you haven&#8217;t paid enough.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"filing-season-numbers-will-even-out\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Filing season numbers will &#8216;even out&#8217;<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Although the average refund is currently smaller, &#8220;historically, filing season numbers even out as more tax returns come in,&#8221; according to the agency.<\/p>\n<p>As of Feb. 14, the IRS received roughly 33 million individual tax returns of the more than 140 million it expects before the April 15 deadline.<\/p>\n<p>As of Dec. 27, 2024, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/filing-season-statistics-for-week-ending-dec-27-2024\" target=\"_blank\">average tax refund<\/a> for the 2024 season was $3,138, compared to $3,167 in late December 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"dont-call-the-irs-for-refund-updates\" class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>&#8216;Don&#8217;t call the IRS&#8217; for refund updates<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The latest filing statistics come <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/02\/21\/irs-layoffs-impact-your-tax-refund.html\">amid mass layoffs<\/a> for the agency as Elon Musk&#8217;s so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/02\/13\/elon-musk-calls-for-the-us-government-to-delete-entire-agencies-remove-the-roots-of-the-weed.html\">Department of Government Efficiency<\/a>, or DOGE, continues <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/02\/19\/amid-doge-cuts-elon-musk-turns-focus-to-social-security-beneficiaries-over-100.html\">to cull the federal workforce<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s unclear exactly how the staffing reduction could impact future taxpayer service. But experts recommend double-checking returns for accuracy to avoid extra touch points with the agency.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Don&#8217;t call the IRS looking for your refund,&#8221; said Tom O&#8217;Saben, an enrolled agent and director of tax content and government relations at the National Association of Tax Professionals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You can check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/02\/05\/wheres-my-refund.html\">status of your refund<\/a> via the agency&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/wheres-my-refund\" target=\"_blank\">Where&#8217;s My Refund?<\/a>&#8221; tool or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/help\/irs2goapp\" target=\"_blank\">IRS2Go<\/a> app, which is &#8220;available 24 hours a day,&#8221; O&#8217;Saben said.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, the agency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/2025-tax-filing-season-starts-as-irs-begins-accepting-tax-returns-today-taxpayers-have-many-options-for-help\" target=\"_blank\">issues refunds<\/a> within 21 days of a return&#8217;s receipt.
