{"id":16016,"date":"2025-02-05T20:49:03","date_gmt":"2025-02-05T20:49:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=16016"},"modified":"2025-02-05T20:49:03","modified_gmt":"2025-02-05T20:49:03","slug":"white-house-insists-donald-trump-has-not-committed-to-sending-us-troops-to-gaza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=16016","title":{"rendered":"White House insists Donald Trump has \u2018not committed\u2019 to sending US troops to Gaza"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\">Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=ce8aeb82-8923-4e2e-844e-b06a4cf24454&amp;newsletter-id=65b8fec772badb00166eafc6\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>The White House has sought to assuage fears of a protracted US military intervention in Gaza, insisting Donald Trump\u2019s plan for Washington to assume control of the enclave did not necessarily mean putting \u201cboots on the ground\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that while the president had made a \u201chistoric proposal for the United States to take over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/gaza\" data-trackable=\"link\">Gaza<\/a>\u201d, he had \u201cnot committed\u201d to sending in US troops \u201cjust yet\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been made very clear to the president that the United States needs to be involved in this rebuilding effort,\u201d she said on Wednesday. \u201cThat does not mean boots on the ground in Gaza. It does not mean American taxpayers will be funding this effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leavitt\u2019s comments come a day after Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d2020d81-77a4-488b-9e9a-776379f27068\" data-trackable=\"link\">caused uproar<\/a> in the US and around the world with a proposal that the US should \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/21579349-163f-4337-8e47-1ca8e1bb9741\" data-trackable=\"link\">take control<\/a>\u201d of the Palestinian enclave and that its entire population of 2.2mn should be resettled.<\/p>\n<p>The plan also provoked a hostile reaction from many in the president\u2019s own party, with some Republicans saying it strayed from his \u201cAmerica First\u201d agenda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought we voted for America First,\u201d said Rand Paul, a Republican senator from Kentucky. \u201cWe have no business contemplating yet another occupation to doom our treasure and spill our soldiers blood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Josh Hawley, a Republican senator from Missouri, echoed his concerns. \u201cI don\u2019t know that I think it\u2019s the best use of United States resources to spend a bunch of money in Gaza,\u201d he told the Jewish Insider.<\/p>\n<p>Some party members saw Trump\u2019s proposal as contradicting his longtime criticism of US intervention in \u201cendless\u201d foreign wars. <\/p>\n<p>Lindsey Graham, a Republican senator from South Carolina, described the plan as \u201cproblematic\u201d. \u201cI think most South Carolinians would probably not be excited about sending Americans to take over Gaza,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Secretary of state Marco Rubio sought to calm jitters over Trump\u2019s proposal, saying it was \u201cnot meant as a hostile move\u201d but rather as an \u201coffer to rebuild\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat he\u2019s very generously offering is the ability of the United States to go in and help with debris removal, help with munitions removal, help with reconstruction, the rebuilding of homes and businesses and things of this nature, so that people can move back in,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Other Republicans rallied behind the president. Mike Johnson, Republican speaker of the House of Representatives, conceded the announcement had been \u201cgreeted with surprise by many\u201d but insisted it was \u201ccheered by people all around the world\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson said: \u201cHe\u2019s taking bold, decisive action to try to ensure the peace of that region. It\u2019s a bold move certainly.
