{"id":16002,"date":"2025-02-05T17:59:45","date_gmt":"2025-02-05T17:59:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=16002"},"modified":"2025-02-05T17:59:45","modified_gmt":"2025-02-05T17:59:45","slug":"lloyds-hit-with-1bn-tax-bill-after-legal-challenge-fails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=16002","title":{"rendered":"Lloyds hit with \u00a31bn tax bill after legal challenge fails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=390c2f08-c033-4756-80e7-b60645e9450b\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Lloyds Banking Group has been ordered to pay a \u00a31bn tax bill after the UK lender lost the first round of a legal battle with HM Revenue &amp; Customs following losses it incurred in Ireland in the wake of the financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p>In a long-awaited ruling, a tribunal in London dismissed a legal challenge that the bank launched against the UK tax authority concerning its disposal of billions of euros worth of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/57869e14-c432-11e0-ad9a-00144feabdc0\" data-trackable=\"link\"> Irish property loans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/lloyds-banking-group\" data-trackable=\"link\">Lloyds<\/a> had claimed tax relief on losses it incurred on the assets, which it inherited as part of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d7fa43e0-8496-11dd-b148-0000779fd18c\" data-trackable=\"link\">\u00a312bn government-brokered rescue<\/a> of Halifax Bank of Scotland in 2008 at the height of the financial crisis. Lloyds wound down its Irish operations \u2014 which had \u00a324.7bn worth of loans \u2014 less than two years later, after it disclosed that 90 per cent of its Irish commercial property loan book was impaired.<\/p>\n<p>HMRC disputes the bank\u2019s eligibility for the tax relief, arguing that the bank\u2019s desire to claim tax relief was behind its decision to exit the market. Two tribunal judges heard the case almost two years ago but they did not hand down their ruling until last month.<\/p>\n<p>Lloyds said on Wednesday that it would appeal the findings to the Upper Tribunal, setting the stage for a protracted legal fight.
