{"id":15798,"date":"2025-02-04T05:51:28","date_gmt":"2025-02-04T05:51:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=15798"},"modified":"2025-02-04T05:51:28","modified_gmt":"2025-02-04T05:51:28","slug":"el-salvador-offers-to-house-us-prisoners-in-its-jails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialrush.com\/?p=15798","title":{"rendered":"El Salvador offers to house US prisoners in its jails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\">Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=7e12ac82-3b7d-4935-9b04-0c06fdd2bcb2&amp;newsletter-id=65b8fec772badb00166eafc6\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>El Salvador\u2019s President Nayib Bukele has said the Central American country could take convicted prisoners from the US in exchange for a fee. <\/p>\n<p>During a visit by US secretary of state Marco Rubio, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/stream\/9618a40f-1e07-4ef2-a49b-6faf7a035723\" data-trackable=\"link\">Bukele<\/a> on Monday agreed to take El Salvadoran gang members as well as \u201cviolent illegal immigrants\u2009.\u2009.\u2009. from any country\u201d, the US state department said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He also said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/stream\/acd85f21-2015-3718-a474-0b998c0a25f0\" data-trackable=\"link\">El Salvador<\/a> could take in American citizens and legal residents convicted of crimes and house them in maximum security prisons, which the state department called \u201can extraordinary gesture never before extended by any country\u201d, though it was not clear if Washington would accept the offer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have offered the [US] the opportunity to outsource part of its prison system,\u201d Bukele wrote on social media platform X. \u201cThe fee would be relatively low for the US but significant for us, making our entire prison system sustainable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rubio has embarked on his first international trip as secretary of state to Central America as he seeks to broker deals to support US President Donald Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/59232a13-f7e2-40cd-af73-4035037cb3b3\" data-trackable=\"link\">vow to clamp down<\/a> on illegal immigration.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has pressured Latin American countries, including Mexico, Colombia and Venezuela, to accept immigrants expelled from the US, and has proposed holding those with criminal records at the US naval base <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/62ce0749-c00a-4c8a-8332-c25e0860ade1\" data-trackable=\"link\">in Guant\u00e1namo Bay<\/a>, Cuba, which previously detained high-profile terrorism suspects. <\/p>\n<p>The US reported record arrivals at its southern border during Joe Biden\u2019s presidency, but numbers have fallen dramatically in the past few months.<\/p>\n<p>Bukele, an authoritarian who has styled himself as the \u201cCEO of El Salvador\u201d, enjoys some of the highest approval ratings in the region, in part after he slashed homicide rates by locking up more than 2 per cent of the adult population.\u00a0He has also become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/99f09fcb-c13e-48dd-9658-18142f521d4f\" data-trackable=\"link\">favourite of the US right wing<\/a> after rebranding the country a bitcoin-friendly surf destination.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the suspected gang members he has detained are awaiting trial and housed in the notorious Centre for the Confinement of Terrorists (Cecot), one of the world\u2019s largest maximum security prisons. As of August, Cecot was holding 14,500 people, 36 per cent of its capacity of 40,000, according to local media.<\/p>\n<aside aria-labelledby=\"aside-label\" class=\"n-content-recommended--single-story n-content-recommended--inset\" data-component=\"recommended\">\n<p class=\"n-content-recommended__title\">Recommended<\/p>\n<div class=\"o-teaser o-teaser--article o-teaser--small o-teaser--stacked o-teaser--has-image js-teaser\" data-id=\"d05a1b0a-f444-4337-99d2-84d9f0b59f95\">\n<div class=\"o-teaser__image-container js-teaser-image-container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d05a1b0a-f444-4337-99d2-84d9f0b59f95\" data-trackable=\"image-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"o-teaser__image-placeholder\" style=\"aspect-ratio:2048\/1152\"><\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Rubio has also been pushing Latin American leaders to shun China, which has made inroads in the region in recent years with high-profile infrastructure investments, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/e6b74d70-91a7-4216-aadb-375c9343427b\" data-trackable=\"link\">mega-port in Peru<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During the top US diplomat\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b34809e3-3f59-4b05-9caf-27e2f781e7b8\" data-trackable=\"link\">visit to Panama<\/a> last week, Panama\u2019s President Jos\u00e9 Ra\u00fal Mulino announced the country\u2019s withdrawal from Beijing\u2019s Belt and Road Initiative, Chinese leader Xi Jinping\u2019s signature foreign development policy.
