Your guide to what Trump’s second term means for Washington, business and the world
The US Secret Service has shot and killed a man who breached the secure perimeter around President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
Trump and wife Melania were in Washington at the time.
Around 1.30am on Sunday, two Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach sheriff’s deputy killed a white man in his early twenties who was carrying a shotgun and a gasoline canister, according to the federal agency and Palm Beach county sheriff.
The US president faced two attempts on his life during the 2024 presidential campaign. During a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania that July, he was wounded in an assassination attempt when a gunman opened fire during his remarks. About two months later, a man with a rifle was apprehended near Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach while the president was golfing.
The FBI is leading the investigation, with the Secret Service and Palm Beach sheriff’s office involved as well.
